Day Without Dinner - Sort Of
The Adventures never stop when you are a Lasquetian. Yesterday I put my grocery order in to be delivered to the 2:30 ferry today which would dovetail nicely with my appointment with the nurse at 1:30 p.m.
I get up this morning (it was before noon, so it still counts as morning!) quickly down some coffee, make Vaughn his breakfast . . . this time I was smart and got the wood stove going while making coffee so the water for my "shower" would be ready by the time I threw Vaughn his food. Loaded up my bucket of water, grabbed a towel and headed to the outdoor shower (some 2 x 4's wrapped in a tarp). As I approached I did my usual "tree talking" so that hopefully I won't get dead while cleaning myself up. You see we have a dead standing tree right behind our shower stall and if it ever decides to give out it will probably crash land right on top of it. Vaughn says the tree will probably stand for a few years, but I am not taking any chances.

Okey doke. Showering without getting dead done, back to the cabin to get dressed. While brushing my hair my cell phone rings. I look down at it and it's Quality Foods calling. Great. What now. I have 20 minutes before I have to roll down the mountain to go see the nurse (who is only on Lasqueti every Thursday). Girl on the other end says there is a problem with my credit card and it won't go through. I calmly tell her (well not so calm as I watch the clock) that my card is fine. LOTS of room on it for groceries. So she says she will contact their I.T. guy and see what's up.
Just to be safe I call my credit card company and as I suspected all fine on my end. No time to waste I make my way down the mountain into town. Nurse visit finished and a success I decide to call QF to ensure my groceries are on the boat. After being on ignore for a terminally long time, the girl who shops the orders tells me "No. They did not get on."
Anyway to make a long story long, after a few choice words to the girl it was finally arranged to have them on the 5:30. I had already arranged to meet with Kathy as we were going to have groceries on the same boat so I figured what the hey, stay in town instead of making the 1/2 hour drive each way plus the climb up and down the mountain.
Kathy and I hooked up at the pub, had a few beers, discussed what we wanted to do with the website and then she asked "What are you cooking tonight?"
COOKING??? Crap. I forgot all about my Cooking and Blogging Adventure.
"I don't know" I said "I have some ingredients coming to me for cookbook recipes, but for the most part what I want is local grown stuff."
"Did you check out the veggie stand on Conn Rd.?" she asks.
"There is a veggie stand on Conn Rd.?" Let me fill in some details here. When you get off the ferry in False Bay you got your Main Rd. Just past the pub you can turn onto Weldon if you live that way or go straight to the Tea Pot House where there is a T in the road, left is Conn Rd., right is still Main Rd. I turn right to go home. In the 5 years coming here and the one year full time res, I have been down Conn Rd three times. That's Lasqueti, unless you know someone down some of these roads you just don't go down them.
OK, back to the story. Told you long story, long. Bored yet? Ha ha. My Blog.
Since I had time to kill to wait for my groceries I decided to go check out this veggie stand. I love the Lasquetian Honor System. It really shows you the tight-knit-ness of this community. And oh the treasures that were there!

After feasting my eyes on the plethora of goodies it was time to head back to the dock so I could get my Kia on there before it filled up. Being about an hour early for the boat I took a few moments to drink in the beauty of False Bay Harbour when a Blue Heron glided gracefully over the water to land on the end of the dock. For a few minutes it was just me and him, hanging out.
5:25 p.m. and I can hear the low rumble of the ferry making it's turn into the harbour. FINALLY. Groceries!
Luckily summer is over and it isn't too much of a gong show. Seriously you should see the dock in the summer with all the summer people and tourists who aren't "dock savvy". They clutter up the No Hugging Zone (with suitcases, cargo and what have you) and, as stated, breaking the #1 rule of No Hugging!
Groceries off the boat and lugged up the ramp I do a quick watch check 6:50 p.m. and calculate . . . 1/2 hour drive home, climb up the hill, unload and put away 4 boxes of groceries, 2 of them are filled with meat which I have to package up and freeze, and I am still supposed to look for a recipe and COOK it. I glance up. There is Tio; so now I need to add another 20 minutes to drive him home. Which I don't mind, I love Tio's company.
Anyway, so there it is and here I am 9:00 p.m. and no Cooking and Community on Lasqueti Island recipe made. Oh well. There is always tomorrow!
The Bonus? The husband cooked a full chicken dinner with mashed and gravy, roasted peppers and onions and green beans. Yummmmmy!
