About the Band:
Makeke Marimba is a vibrant, energetic dance band from Lasqueti Island. Our music is inspired by the Shona tradition of Zimbabwe. The music is based on ancient melodies and poly-rhythms originally played on mbira (elaborate wood and metal thumb pianos). Makeke is a Shona word that translates as “lots of cake” and means good or sweet. (And cake plays a big role at our practices!)
We use instruments that have been made on the island by members of the band. Though we sometimes play off island, primarily our performances are part of the fabric of Lasqueti community. We play at local celebrations and festivals, and every summer we play our favourite gig on the ferry dock with the ocean and setting sun behind us.
Makeke has been playing marimba music on Lasqueti since 1996. Some band members dance away and new ones jump right in.
